AirWaterScore started with a frustration Eric ran into while helping a friend weigh a cross-country job offer that came down to two ZIP codes — one near an industrial corridor, one in a small town with an aging water system. The environmental data existed, scattered across EPA and state databases, but nothing pulled air quality and drinking-water safety together into a plain answer for either address.
So he built something better. AirWaterScore is a free, no-account-required tool that gives you a single, sourced score for the air and water at any U.S. ZIP code — and shows you exactly which agency records it came from.
Eric spent years pulling public data out of agency portals never designed for a non-specialist — EPA dashboards, state health department PDFs, utility disclosure filings — and got tired of environmental risk being scattered across a dozen sources in language built for regulators, not homebuyers. He built AirWaterScore to put that same agency-grade data behind a single ZIP code search.

How it works
Every tool on AirWaterScore is grounded in a documented, citable method — a published formula, an authoritative standard, or a well-established model. We don't approximate or invent numbers. If we can't cite a primary source for the logic, we don't publish the tool.
For AirWaterScore, that means every score traces back to EPA AirNow's monitored air-quality readings and EPA's SDWIS/ECHO drinking-water violation and enforcement records — never a modeled estimate or a third-party ranking. Before a scoring method ships, we confirm it maps directly to the underlying agency records and document how each input is weighted.

- We show our work. Every tool explains its methodology, cites its sources, and surfaces assumptions — so you can verify the logic, not just trust the output.
- Honest about limitations. Where precision is limited or assumptions are required, we say so. Tools compute; they don't replace professional judgment.
